Project Objective

The Beata Ridge Scientific Expedition Project (Dominican Republic) is part of a global effort to conserve marine ecosystems in the Caribbean, a region particularly threatened by anthropogenic pressures such as overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution and climate change. In response to international commitments made under the 30x30 objectives, aimed at protecting 30% of marine areas by 2030, the Dominican government initiated the creation of a new marine protected area (MPA) on the Beata Ridge. In order to provide a solid scientific basis for the establishment of this MPA, a large-scale expedition was carried out in partnership with the CCS and various local and international NGOs. This project made it possible to study the diversity and distribution of marine megafauna species (cetaceans, sharks, pelagic fish, turtles and seabirds), to analyze their habitat use and connectivity on a Caribbean scale, as well as to assess the threats to these ecosystems. Through the use of innovative techniques, such as environmental DNA, and the training of local partners, this expedition has contributed to strengthening the sustainable management of marine biodiversity. The results obtained will serve as a scientific reference for the implementation of appropriate conservation measures, ensuring the long-term protection of species and their environment.
