Who are we ?

Marine biologists and conservationists

The oceans, essential to life on Earth, harbor an exceptional biodiversity. Among the vast array of living beings that inhabit them, 90 species of cetaceans have been recorded worldwide. A third of them frequent the Caribbean region, either permanently or seasonally.

This region plays a crucial role by hosting around thirty cetacean species and providing them with the resources necessary for their feeding and reproduction. However, for several decades, these species have been facing numerous threats that compromise their conservation. The preservation of this biological wealth is all the more complex as it is influenced by the region’s cultural, legislative, and linguistic diversity.

Founded in 2020 by two Caribbean biologists, the Caribbean Cetacean Society (CCS) is dedicated to the protection of cetaceans through international cooperation in the Caribbean, bringing together NGOs, researchers, governments, and citizens to ensure their conservation.

The Pillars of the CCS

The CCS is developed around four pillars which bring together those who bring it to life

Cooperation

To love is to share: let's join forces to protect cetaceans beyond borders. Together, let's harmonize local initiatives, bring together decision-makers and encourage the pooling of efforts.

Conservation

We support public policies in the development and management of conservation measures by providing expertise for strategic documents. Our action supports the creation, management and effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to achieve their preservation objectives.

Research

"We protect what we love and we love what we know." Driven by our passion for nature, we unite the stakeholders of each island to promote collaborative scientific research for the conservation of cetaceans.

Education

We highlight the work of the community and raise awareness among local populations to promote better protection of cetaceans by popularizing scientific knowledge and leading educational campaigns, we strengthen awareness and the involvement of all.
