The Caribbean association that unites the islands for the conservation of cetaceans

The Caribbean is a true biodiversity hotspot: this vast network of islands, surrounded by a sea rich and varied in terms of habitats, is home to an ecological heritage that is unique in the world. Among this remarkable biodiversity, more than a third of the known species of cetaceans have been recorded there. This exceptional concentration is explained by the diversity of marine habitats, as well as the abundance of prey that the region offers. It represents an ideal refuge for the life, reproduction and migration of cetaceans.

Despite this idyllic setting, cetaceans today face many threats. Pollution, collisions with ships, accidental fishing and entanglement in fishing gear, as well as habitat degradation and the effects of climate change, are jeopardizing their survival. Furthermore, the lack of reliable scientific data in the region, regarding population size, behavior, migration dynamics or interactions with other species, complicates the assessment of the situation. Greater effort is needed to better study and protect them, before irreversible losses occur.

It is in this context that the Caribbean Cetacean Society initiative was created, with the mission of filling these gaps and strengthening cetacean conservation actions in the region.

Conservation, Science and Education, together, without borders

Established in 2020, the Caribbean Cetacean Society (CCS) is an NGO dedicated to the conservation of cetaceans in the Caribbean region. Committed to protecting the various species of cetaceans in the Caribbean, the association's mission is to strengthen international cooperation in order to support various research and awareness programs. These initiatives aim to acquire new scientific knowledge, improve conservation practices and raise awareness of environmental issues among a wide audience, on a Caribbean scale.
